Blue INNOship fact #7

Project #12

Out docking hull performance improvement
Goals and objectives

The success criteria of this project is to identify ways to decrease the roughness of the coating surface and thereby decrease the frictional resistance (drag resistance) and increase fuel efficiency for vessels in the pristine condition (i.e. out of dry-dock).

Update from the project (March 2017)

In this project, the effects of welding seams on drag resistance of a trading vessel have amongst others been studied thoroughly.

A pilot-scale rotary setup with a newly designed flexible rotor have been used to measure the effect of welding seems of different dimensions and density, and CFD simulation of welding seams on ship hull surface has been conducted successfully. The results so far indicate a significant contribution of welding seems on the drag of a ship hull.
