Scrubbers – Controlling PM Emissions
Goals and objectives
Investigate how emissions of PM (particular matter, black carbon, soot, etc) can be further reduced by optimising scrubber design and propose robust and practical methods for approval and control of the scrubber system.
Update from the project (March, 2017):
The uncertainties in the PM measurements are very high - but the idea in the project was to start to quantify all of these uncertainties – for example by repeating the same measurements under exactly the same engine load and operating conditions with the same fuel type and by measuring with different equipment in parallel.


The work has been focused on:

  1. Quantify the uncertainties associated with particular matter (PM) and black carbon (BC) measurement techniques
  2. Clarify the possibilities and limitations of different PM/BC measuring methods.
  3. Increase our knowledge of how engine type and its operating parameters affect the PM/BC emission (both with and without a scrubber)
  4. Increase our knowledge of how exhaust gas scrubbers can help to reduce the PM/BC emissions from an engine even further.
  5. Knowledge disseminating as this is also a pre-requisite for authorities in order to regulate these emissions.

The first part of the work in this project has focused on point 1 and 2 since this is a prerequisite for continuing with point 3, 4 and 5.

A large number of measurements have been carried out at both MAN 2-stroke test engine in Copenhagen and at Alfa Lavals 4-stroke test engine in Aalborg with both Diesel Oil (DO) and Heavy Fuel Oil (HFO).

The results from above measurements and analysis will be published in 2017 and is considered to be an important contribution to the further research and development within this field as well as for the discussions going on in the MEPC sub-committee under the International Maritime Organisation.
